Check out all your old friends at their new home http://rattangent.com/ for regular weekly comics and not-so-tangential tangents.|

Killjoy's Summer Sabbatical
Great news, everyone. While KilljoyComics appears to have taken a dirt nap, LabRats has ascended to its own cloud in the ether: LabRats is now Rat Tangent. Check out all your old friends at their new home http://rattangent.com/ for regular weekly comics and not-so-tangential tangents.

Killjoy's Summer Sabbatical
Yes, it's true. Killjoy is taking a sabbatical while creator Todd spends the summer on some life-changing projects. First and foremost, an acute midlife crisis has inspired me to seek a new career as a freelance illustrator. Unfortunately, I can't quit my day job, so my evenings must be committed to creating a slick new body of work. I'm going to be pitching a portfolio of celebrity caricatures, each of which I'll post upon completion for your viewing pleasure.
Secondly, I've been invited by some of my hero web cartoonists, who at the moment shall remain nameless, to join them in creating a printed comics anthology, so look for more on that when it's complete at the end of the summer. Lastly, looks like I'll be providing art and writing content for my community's website, so that will soak up whatever time I have left.
During my hiatus, KilljoyComics will keep going strong, so keep coming back for Lab Rats, Martin Molotov: Punk Engineer, Slap of Reality Man and Garbanzo. Also, I've roped those artists into doing Killjoy guest strips, so you can get your fix of puerile cynicism from time to time during July, August and September. And who knows who else might toss in a guest strip or two?

The 1/2 Hour Comic Experiment
Yeah, I'm not fooling anyone -- I didn't plan ahead -- but as many of ya know, I've not only been out of town, but I've also been wiped out with a nasty cold or flu bug thing! And yet, it is true, I've been wondering what I could do in 1/2 hour. Hm, maybe next time we'll see if a 1-hour comic yields better results. :-p

Killjoy was late but it's not my fault!
So my web service provider decided to upgrade my control panel to a sluggish new model, completely unintuitive and slower than molasses. It's so incredibly inefficient, I can't put it into words. I'm still fuming about it. And what's more, it made my bookmarks to the control panel not work, so I thought their server was down 'cause I kept getting "404 Server not found" error messages, which is why Killjoy was not updated in the wee hours Wednesday morning. So once again, very sorry, and I'm going to work with them to make sure this not only gets fixed, but doesn't happen again.

KJC Attends the ToonSeum Fundraiser: Ka-Blam!
Killjoy Comics had a great time at the Ka-Blam fundraiser for the Toonseum in Pittsburgh. If you get a chance, get down there to see the Peanuts exhibit before it is gone! Great, great stuff.
May 1, 2008
Hey, so I'm weeks short of sleep at this point, so I'm gonna show you a sneak preview of the comic that I tried to have done for you today -- as well as my very first convention sketch: Zombie Supergirl!

NEW Dungeon Crawl T-shirts!
Gamers rejoice! This is the shirt you've been waiting for: The Dungeon Crawl tee smugly proclaims, "If you have to ask, you wouldn't understand." So show your gamer solidarity by donning this emblem of our shared cultural heritage. If you tried to buy this shirt at the show, but found us out of stocks of Medium or Large, our profoundest apologies -- and look, we made the shirt available ASAP, just like we promised! :-)
Welcome Comicon Visitors
Once again, welcome to all our friends, old and new, who are visiting after chatting with us at the Pittsburgh Comicon!
Today's Killjoy is an original strip, though never intended for Internet publication, thus the untimely topic. But a loved one is having some minor surgery tomorrow morning, so I was not able to do something new for you. We hope you enjoy this Killjoy -- enjoy a killjoy, hey, that's kinda funny -- and tune in all week for new KJC strips!
In other news, hey again, did you notice Killjoy hit a minor milestone in its Internet career? 150 strips as of Friday, the first day of the Pittsburgh con. A momentous day in history.

Pittsburgh Comicon Highlights
|Well, the Pittsburgh Comicon was a blast! The long weekend came and went in the blink of an eye. Many thanks to all you cool people who visited our booth and took home some KilljoyComics.com memorabilia! Your support keeps us inspired. Same goes for all the advice and encouragement from our wiser web- and print-cartoonist buddies:
Danielle Corsetto of Girls With Slingshots;
Joe, Phil and Irv of Digital Pimp;
Jaime Hatton of In His Likeness;
D.J. Coffman of Hero By Night;
Pat Lewis of Lunchbox Comics;
and Ed Piskor (Macedonia). |
(And let's not forget our avid supporter Jeff at Phantom of the Attic, Pittsburgh's premier comics shop. Congrats on moving to the swanky new digs across the street!!!)
And we made some new friends too, like Lora Innes of The Dreamer; Christi Johnson of In The Puddle; Kristin Blank and Michael Wood of Hate Your Friends, assisted by our ole buddy Sloan; and more! (Slooooaaaaaaannnnnnnnn, great to see you again, buddy!) Let's hope I do a better job of posting the Con page in a more timely manner than previous con pages.

April Fools: Half-finished Killjoy!!!
Ya know how you've all been bugging me to show you some of my creative process? Well, lucky y'all! It just so happens I'm too darn tired to finish this ambitious, complex, wordy comic tonight. So what you get is the half-finished comic. AND I had the astounding foresight not to sketch the punchline in yet, so nothing will be ruined for you when you finally see the finished product.
It's very peculiar, I think, that I always do the bits that I think will be most difficult; you'd think I'd wait 'til my hand loosened up, 'til the fingers warmed up, at least until I knew whether I was using a good pen or not. But no, I just dive into the the hardest parts first. Please note some special lettering; this is something an art teacher once told me I had no talent for, and to this day I am terrified of lettering -- perhaps rightly so!

Killjoy on Vacation!
Hey all! It's my birthday, and my present to myself is a full night's rest. I thank you, Killjoy thanks you, my family thanks you! See y'all tomorrow for a new LAB RATS!

GAMING WEEK! Check out the week in honor of Gary Gygax
Wow, it's been a strangely sorrowful, poignant yet heartwarming week for us. We hope you've enjoyed -- or will enjoy -- the comics we created in honor of the late Gary Gygax. You can see them all at our Gary Gygax tribute page, which was beefed up tonight with some cool new material. Something tells me that this is not a one-time deal; we'll update this page as inspiration demands.
March 11, 2008
GAMING WEEK BEGINS: All week in honor of Gary Gygax
Gaming Week begins today, Tuesday, with two new strips by the creators of Killjoy and Martin Molotov, so check out their latest pages.
Also we've updated the Gary Gygax tribute page with the new strips and a slick Elric image, so check it out! Look for more all week from all your favorite comics: Lab Rats, Garbanzo and Slap of Reality Man as well as another Killjoy and Martin Molotov strip.

Announcing GAMING WEEK: All week in honor of Gary Gygax
Yeah, we did some tribute art and a gaming comic last week; but it just wasn't enough. So check back each day this week for a new gaming-related comic in honor of Gary Gygax.
And if that's not enough, then check out the Gary Gygax tribute page. It's a work in progress, so check back again later for more.

Fare thee well, Gary Gygax!
Hey, I know I promised you a farewell missive in honor of Gary, but I spent so much time on the new Killjoy comic honoring the game that, well, missive is postponed. Enjoy the new Killjoy.

Tomorrow, a farewell missive.

Lab Rats delayed by Yahoo!?!
Though Mark "the Mighty" Anticole got me his new Lab Rats on Sunday night, well in advance, his post is delayed. For the past twelve hours I've been trying to get his new comic from my Yahoo mail account. I thought the problem was my computer, so I ran a defrag, which as many of you know can take all night for crumby old computers like mine. Then in the morning, we checked and rechecked our internet connections -- fine too. I have to assume the problem is on Yahoo's end, since I can get to all my other usual websites. Check back this afternoon or evening -- with luck this will be resolved by then. Many apologies to Mark, the beloved lab rats, and all their adoring fans.
March 3, 2008
Experimental New Killjoy: Sorry for the delay!!!
Hey, check out today's zany misadventures of Joy and Killjoy! And if litter, doodles or the phrase "couldn't find her way out of a paper bag" leaps to mind, well, that was all intentional.

Gimme some S.P.A.C.E.!!!
Hello everyone. Welcome back, loyal readers, and WELCOME new readers. SPACE was a great time: we met lots of friendly and talented artists and writers; did well selling our KJC merchandise; learned tons about what works at con booths and what we could improve; and ate lots of delicious little individual pizzas. But for the full report, tune in each night this week for more info. |
Because of popular demand, many more varieties of La Brea shirts have been added to the CafePress store; so if you want a tank top or ringer tee, you're all set!
February 29, 2008
S.P.A.C.E.: The First Frontier!!!
Hey everyone! Sorry there's no comic today, but it's for a great cause! The KilljoyComics Crew is on the road, going to the Small Press and Comics Expo, in Columbus, Ohio! It's our very first con as exhibitors: We've got signs, a booth, even MERCHANDISE! So if you're in the area, swing on by and say hello! If you're not, then heck, just wish us luck! :-)
February 23, 2008
La Brea Swim Team Comic ... and Tees!!!
Okay, today's comic in Killjoy is a little digression, I admit. But I think it's hilarious, and I've been meaning to do this for a while. If you think it's funny too, and you just have to have a shirt or mug or something with this cool design on it, click here to go to the La Brea Swim Team shop!

A BIG WEEK for KilljoyComics: LAB RATS turns 50 strips old on Wednesday!!! Congrats to creator Mark Anticole and his little rodent buddies for their excellent strip! 'Killjoy' cartoonist Todd Swanson and 'Slap of Reality Man' creator Rick Antolic will both contribute guest strips to help celebrate Mark's achievement! So check back to the Lab Rats site for triple the fuzzy goodness:
Wednesday: Lab Rats 50th
Thursday: Lab Rats guest strip from Todd Swanson
Friday: Lab Rats guest strip from Rick Antolic!
And Killjoy will be late tomorrow (Tuesday) because of a pen crisis, but look for two new Killjoys Tuesday night and Friday, as usual.

This week the KJC team toured Pittsburgh's ToonSeum, a museum dedicated to the art and impact of cartoons. The fledgling museum, currently hosted by the Pittsburgh Children's Museum, is receiving heaps of support, not only from cartoonists, but also from numerous sponsors, including charitable foundations and the private sector. As a result, the ToonSeum plans to grow rapidly over the next few years: Next year, the ToonSeum will have homes in two other Pittsburgh museums, including the Warhol, and Joe Wos, founder of the ToonSeum, fully expects to have a new space devoted entirely to the ToonSeum as early as 2010! In the meantime, the ToonSeum already has been, and will continue to be home to many great shows, including the upcoming Snoopy and Schoolhouse Rock shows.
Click the ToonSeum icon in the top right corner of the screen to learn more about this awesome endeavor, and check this blog regularly to learn about the upcoming Web Comics Panel Discussion (coming in 2008), the Web Comics Exhibit (coming in 2009), and other KilljoyComics involvement with the ToonSeum!!! :-)

From left: Todd Swanson, Mark Anticole, Doc Holiday and Tony Schiffbauer. (Not shown: Rick Antolic and Tam Swanson.)
Though we appear to be clubbing in a swanky EuroTrash discotek, we're really brainstorming at Ryan's Pub, banking on our brain trust to make us millionaires on the conventions circuit. Have any tips for us? Email us at KilljoyComics@yahoo.com.
So far, we're planning on bedazzling the already scintillating halls of SPACE, Pittsburgh Comicon, and SPX. Come and see us! We'll be peddling our wares, including a KilljoyComics sampler booklet; Write of Passage, our first 24-hour comic; Potluck samplers; and more!
So where the heck is Rick Antolic, surly senor of Slap of Reality Man? Why, he was being interviewed for a TV newscast, of course! As president of the Pittsburgh Society of Illustrators, Rick will wax poetic about his participation in the upcoming Pittsburgh RECAST: Pittsburgh Society of Illustrator's 10th Anniversary Exhibit on Pittsburgh's KDKA Evening News on Monday! (Check back on Tuesday for a link to this clip!)
